Susan Cherry

I am a PhD candidate at Stanford GSB. I am on the 2024-2025 academic job market.

My research focuses on the role of financial regulation in consumer credit markets, particularly on how regulation and lender technologies impact the supply of credit to borrowers traditionally underserved by the mainstream financial system.

In my job market paper, I focus on the effects of price regulations and regulatory oversight (state licensing, examinations, etc.) on credit supply in the U.S. nonbank personal loan market. My research shows that these well-intentioned regulations can unintentionally limit credit access by driving out lenders with advanced screening technologies, disproportionately affecting borrowers with lower credit scores and limited credit histories.

My prior work examines the role of government and private household debt relief in the mortgage market during the COVID-19 pandemic, paying particular attention to the role of nonbanks in passing along this relief financially vulnerable individuals.
